How to Use This Series

The Family Involvement in Care series will help family caregivers develop the skills to act as partners in dementia care for their loved ones. Support group leaders will need to view the following brief introductory video first for how to best use this series with your support group participants. To start the video, click on the white arrow in the box in the center of the player. If you are using this series as an individual, please scroll down for instructions.

Instructions

This 10-part series covers those topics most useful to persons providing dementia care. We recommend using this as a series, as content builds throughout the topics, but each part can also be viewed independently if you prefer.

Each part has four sections with a screen that looks like this:

Navigate among these four sections by clicking the tabs in order from left to right – an example is circled in red in the image above.

Presentation – The presentation is the heart of each part. It introduces a key concept in dementia care and discusses the role it plays in building partnerships with care providers. Discussion breaks in the presentation provide opportunities for support groups to pause and discuss the topic or for individuals to think about their own experiences. The length of the presentation is shown on the tab. To start the presentation, click on the white arrow in the box in the center of the player.

Support group leaders: you will find a link to a printable page for take-away messages just below the presentation – an example is circled in dark blue in the image above. You may print this page and hand it out to your participants.

Pearls of Wisdom – These are short video clips of family caregivers offering helpful tips and advice based on their experiences. There are typically 3-5 clips; the total length is shown on the tab. To start the Pearls, click on the white arrow in the box in the center of the player.

Related Resources – Each part has its own unique set of printable resources that supplements the topic.

Satisfaction Survey – At the end of each part is a 4-item survey that should take only 1-2 minutes to complete. All responses are anonymous. Please submit the survey for each part you complete, as your feedback is essential in helping us continue to provide no-cost information and education for people caring for a loved one with dementia. To navigate through the survey, click the yellow button located at the bottom right portion of the screen.

  1. To download the resource and open in on your computer, either click on the blue underlined name of the document, or click on the small blue icon of a box and arrow next to the name of the document. An example of this icon is circled in yellow in the image above. A box will open on your screen asking if you want to open or save the file. Please note that these instructions will be slightly different depending on what kind of computer you are using (for example, a PC, a Mac, etc.) Follow the instructions to open the file and/or save it to your computer. When you open the file, it will open in a new window using your Adobe Acrobat Reader program. When you save the file, select the “Save As” option and be sure to save it someplace where you can easily find it; for example, the desktop. If you save the file but are not given the option of where to save it, check your computer’s “Downloads” folder.
  1. To open the resource in a preview window without saving it to your computer, click on the icon next to the name of the document that looks like a sheet of paper with a magnifying glass. An example of this icon is circled in red in the image above. This will allow you to view the file directly on your screen. However, if you wish to print the file, you will need to download it. To close the preview window, click on the link above it that reads, “Minimize File Preview.”

To begin the series, please click the “Next” button at the bottom of the screen to continue to the Introduction presentation.
